The Red Road Racing Team:

Team Background

What does the name mean?
Garey is of the Chumash Tribe and since his stay on the Tule River Reservation during the summer of 1997, he has been on the "Red Road" toward Spirituality and a closer contact with The Creator. Although the term has a special meaning for many Native Americans like Garey, it also seems appropriate for racing!

Why do we race?
This question has been asked of almost every racer and team owner. Competition is certainly a major component of the answer but frankly, it's just plain FUN!
Our team is dedicated to the ultimate goal in Motorsports - to win. We have spent many hours in meticulous preparation of the car to achieve this goal. It is our hope that this level of dedication will spill over into the rest of our lives and help us to improve all that we come in contact with.

Our Team
We are a tight-knit group of people working toward a common goal. At all levels of racing, it's very important for the driver/owner to get along with the team's sponsors.

Driver/Team Owner: Garey Guzman

Garey has spent many years working with race cars. He got his first taste of automotive entusiasm from the Lofy family, particularly autocrossing with Fred Lofy. He first went racing as a volunteer crewman for former FIA World Champion and current vintage racer, Ed Swart. Ed raced a variety of cars ranging from his FIA championship Abarth SP2000 to Chevron FB and Sports Racers and they traveled to legendary tracks like Road America, Laguna Seca and Riverside (RIP). Garey also had the opportunity to work with Bob Lee and his spectacular Can-Am cars. After two years at Electramotive Inc. as a student Engineer for the Nissan IMSA GTP Championship winning teams, he moved into SCCA, preparing Dino Crescentini's AutoSpecialty Alfa-Romeo GTV GT-3. That team finished on the podium in it's only trip to the SCCA Valvoline RunOffs in 1991. Garey finally finished his BS in Mechanical Engineering at Cal State Northridge in 2000.

Garey smiles a lot more when he's around the race car or his family!

Many, many thanks to....

Carroll Smith - For his excellent series of books. Carroll's books have laid a foundation for proper car preparation and he has patiently continued to guide me through this journey (yes, Carroll CAN be patient!).
"Luck is were opportunity meets preparation."

Kevin Ripley - For his help and guidance in all things NOT related to mechanical systems.

Tom Christ - Not only for selling me my first race car but also for his continued help and support as the Swift DB-1 was transformed from a roller to a runner! I couldn't have come this far without his patient and quick responses to my many, many questions. He has been very generous with his time, spare parts, and advice (including the most important: How to stay married while racing!).

Heather Fouts - For her friendship and for allowing me to keep my car and trailer in her garage until I could upgrade to a larger garage, uh, I mean, house.

Vicente Vargas - For his constant encouragement and friendship and for being a partner in the Red Road Racing team trailer.

Bob Fouts - For giving me my first job at Earl's Performance Products after graduating college and for proving that a non-engineer can have great engineering ideas too!

Fred and Steve Lofy - For teaching me the basics of automobile maintenance, letting me autocross their cars (even though I continually trounced them!) and for being great friends.

All the guys that let me work with them on their cars: Ed Swart, Bob Lee, Dino Crescentini, Steve Ruiz, The Electramotive Inc/Nissan IMSA GTP team, as well many other racers in both Vintage and SCCA.

I want to thank all my friends and family for their continued love and patience but most importantly, I want to thank my Grandma. She believed in me when there didn't seem to be anything left to believe in and she continues to be the sunshine in my life!
